The director begins with a dubious good idea: to make a horror movie that is entirely feminine. This is done to give credence to her feminist cause and subvert the traditional romance genre. In order to avoid an artistic apartheid that directly falls into the contemporary clichés that have been overused on screen in recent years, almost all of the technical team members here are female.
In fact, the author of Le bal de l’enfer immerses a young mixed-race girl who is very contemporary—the very fair Nathalie Emmanuel, best known for Game of Thrones—into a world that is alien to her, that of the old British aristocracy. The young woman travels to the wedding in a typical Tudor-style home in an effort to learn more about an undiscovered branch of her family (in fact unearthed in Hungary, not far from Budapest, a less expensive filming location than England). There, she meets her family as well as the property’s charming owner, who is charmingly portrayed by Thomas Doherty in “girl trap” mode.
