Scott’s new film (who also premieres Gucci House this year ), is based on the homonymous book by Eric Jager and tells the true story of the famous duel that ended all duels. A story perhaps unknown in our region but one that in France is part of the cultural heritage and is often cited in multiple debates. The film also has a script written jointly by the novelist Nicole Holofcener, Affleck and Damon, the latter two reunited for the writing after their Oscar-winning script in Gus van Sant’s En Busca del Destino (1997).
The obvious reference to which The Last Duel alludes is Rashomon, Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece. Its classic structure, divided into 3 chapters, where each one tells the same story but from the unique perspective of the three protagonists, could have been a good tool. Far from the ambiguity and excellent handling of suspense that Kurosawa’s film presented, the narrative of The Last Duel only limits itself to emulating the structure without ever playing psychologically with the crucial question of the story: the rape of Marguerite. Something that could have been attractive but to which the director vehemently renounces, presenting one of the chapters as The Truth.
